Playing with paint and letting my mind wander as I listened to a biography of one of my favorite painters. While revisiting the familiar life of Artemisia Gentileschi, I quickly decided I wanted to play with metallic colors. I selected gold, bronze and copper.
The loose shape of the woman’s heaving breast and swollen stomach took form after I felt the incredible need to paint an infinity symbol. From there, I wanted to create barriers in the throat and a sense of deformity– in what was clearly shaping up to be a woman’s figure. Instinctively, I started darkening and lightening features; developing shadows, highlights, depth. Scraped on a layer of oppressed palette knife strokes, topped that off with maternal marks that felt authentic and voila.
Before I knew it, I was staring at the expectations, blessings and curses that follow the female gender. Despite “it all,” we are beautiful and full and powerful and capable.
