I am obsessed with the moon and the romantic notion that every person on earth, since the beginning of time, has stared at it. How many organisms has the moon inspired during its 4.53 billion years of existence? What does the dark side of the moon look like and isn’t it wild that tidal locking prevents us from ever seeing the farside with our eyes. These are the kinds of thoughts that constantly enter my mind and inspire my paintings.
On a clear night, I find myself staring so intensely at the moon that my eyes start to tear and I have to blink to alleviate a foggy, slight pain just behind the bridge of my nose. I wanted to express that intense feeling I get when being mesmerized by the moon’s crevices, mountains, lights, shadows and incredible glow.
Texture takes precedence in this painting and is closely followed by how a non-luminous body can trick your eye into believing that the reflection of light is the source of light.
