This Little Light of Mine is an abstract expressionist painting I created when I was second guessing the decision to end a lifelong friendship. I tried to clear my mind and get lost in the painting process but an image of shackles kept creeping into my subconscious and guiding my paintbrush along the canvas board.
Listen. We have to make hard choices in life. And it’s up to us to stand by those choices. It’s hard to say goodbye to something or someone you loved because even though you felt a sense of loyalty and comfort in this thing, you know it had to go because it was stealing pieces of you; it was stealing your light.
So what I’m trying to say, without saying it, is… we have a sense of loyalty to our own self and our own heart. If some external thing is holding you back from burning bright and enjoying that light, let it go. You owe it to yourself to free yourself from any toxicity and take control of your existence. The pain of losing will still be there but the gain of winning will continue to replenish as you let your little light shine.
A Great Big World & Christina Agulera, “Say Something.”
“And I will swallow my pride.
You're the one that I love,
And I'm saying goodbye.
Say something, I'm giving up on you.
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you.
And anywhere, I would've followed you.
Say something, I'm giving up on you.”

But I don’t want to put you in a box. We all have lived different lives and have had different experiences that shift our focal priorities and unique perspectives. The language you translate this piece into makes no difference to me so long as your interpretation makes you feel something.
When you look at this painting, what do you see? What do you feel? What do you remember? What is the first song that comes to your mind?
I’d love to hear your interpretation. Please consider sending me a message with your unique translation of this painting.
