My mother has always admired Claude Monet’s artwork, as well as Vincent Van Gogh. I sat down with the intention of creating Monet’s loose, effortless strokes with Van Gogh’s vibrant and bold color palette. 
 
I adore how the colors in this painting dance together; the greens, blues and yellows create choreography that keep my eyes moving. I love how the lone flower bursts with jewel tones and how each petal is layered with various kisses of color. 
 
I learned that water lilies protect the fish from surface predators and provide cool shade for the water below. I thought of the cyclical relationship I’ve had with my mother since I became a mother myself. A beautiful choreography that provides reflection on the infinite love given and taken in close relationships. 
 
I used a portrait A4 paper size with a raised pattern to really give her a mixture of texture and convenience. 
 
The great thing about this popular printing size is 1) It ships easily 2) A matted frame can really make her colors sing 3) Endless displaying possibilities 4) A highly affordable original piece.
 
In short, Water Lily Dreams for Mother is a painting inspired by my mother and created while listening to our song, “Wind Beneath My Wings.”
